An autonomous decision engine is a software system that evaluates data, rules, models, and contextual information to select and execute an action with limited human intervention. Unlike a system that simply reports insights or recommendations, it can assess available options against defined objectives and constraints, choose a response, and trigger the corresponding workflow or control action.

For example, in an industrial environment, an autonomous decision engine can evaluate equipment conditions, production demand, operating limits, and maintenance status to determine whether to adjust a process, reduce equipment load, or initiate a maintenance workflow. It commonly combines AI models, business rules, real-time data, optimization techniques, and workflow automation to support adaptive decision-making.
