Object detection is a computer vision technique that enables an AI system to identify objects within an image or video and determine where each object is located. Unlike image classification, which assigns a category to an entire image, object detection can recognize multiple objects in the same scene and locate each one using bounding regions.
For example, an intelligent traffic camera can detect cars, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, and traffic signs while determining their positions in the scene. The detected information can then be used for tracking, counting, navigation, safety alerts, or automated inspection. Object detection is widely used in autonomous vehicles, robotics, manufacturing, security systems, retail, agriculture, medical imaging, and smart-city applications.
