MQTT is a lightweight communication protocol that enables connected devices and software systems to exchange messages across a network. Instead of sending information directly between devices, it relies on a broker to receive published messages and deliver them to subscribed clients. This design keeps communication efficient and reduces the amount of data devices need to handle, making it suitable for environments with limited bandwidth or processing capacity.

For example, a smart energy meter can send electricity readings through an MQTT broker, while a monitoring platform subscribes to those updates and displays them. This enables timely data exchange with minimal network overhead. MQTT is commonly used for IoT devices, industrial monitoring, smart homes, connected vehicles, and automation systems.
