A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is software used to manage, track, and coordinate manufacturing activities as they happen on the production floor. It connects production processes with business and planning systems, providing visibility into work orders, materials, equipment, quality checks, production progress, and operator activities. By bringing operational information together, an MES helps organizations maintain consistent processes and improve control over production.

For example, an electronics manufacturer can use an MES to track a product from the moment materials enter the production line through assembly, inspection, and final packaging. The system can record which equipment and materials were used, monitor production status, and capture quality results at each stage. Manufacturing Execution Systems are widely used to improve traceability, reduce production errors, increase efficiency, support quality management, and provide real-time insight into manufacturing operations.
