Lightweight AI refers to artificial intelligence models designed to perform tasks efficiently while requiring relatively little computing power, memory, or storage. These models are often smaller than large, complex systems and can be optimized for faster processing and lower resource consumption. Their compact design makes it possible to run AI directly on devices such as smartphones, sensors, cameras, and embedded systems instead of relying entirely on powerful remote servers.

For example, a smart camera can use a lightweight model to detect objects locally without continuously sending video to a cloud service. This can reduce response times, bandwidth usage, and operating costs. Lightweight AI is useful for edge computing, mobile applications, IoT devices, robotics, embedded systems, and real-time applications where limited resources or fast responses are important.
