License Plate Recognition (LPR) is a computer vision technology that automatically detects and reads vehicle license plates from images or video. It uses cameras and image-processing or machine learning techniques to locate a plate, identify its characters, and convert them into digital information. The system can work with vehicles moving at different speeds and under varying lighting conditions, depending on camera quality and software capabilities.

For example, a parking facility can use LPR to recognize vehicles entering and leaving, allowing automated access and payment processing. It is useful for parking management, toll collection, traffic monitoring, access control, and law enforcement. By reducing manual plate checking, it can improve operational efficiency and provide searchable vehicle records.
