Kubernetes is an open-source platform for deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications. It automates tasks such as starting containers, distributing workloads, replacing failed instances, and adjusting resources as application demand changes. Instead of managing individual containers manually, Kubernetes organizes them into groups and coordinates where and how applications run across a cluster of computing resources.

For example, a streaming service can use Kubernetes to run its web, recommendation, and media-processing services across multiple servers. If demand increases, Kubernetes can automatically start additional application instances, while failed instances can be replaced to maintain availability. Kubernetes is useful for cloud-native applications, microservices, continuous deployment, and distributed systems. It improves scalability, reliability, resource utilization, and operational consistency across complex application environments.
