ISA/IEC 62443 is a series of cybersecurity standards designed to protect industrial automation and control systems (IACS). It provides a structured approach for identifying security risks, defining protection requirements, and maintaining cybersecurity throughout the system lifecycle. The standards address people, processes, and technology, helping asset owners, suppliers, integrators, and service providers work together to protect operational technology environments.

For example, a water treatment facility can use ISA/IEC 62443 principles to assess cyber risks, separate critical systems, control access, and establish secure maintenance practices. This helps reduce the chance that a cyberattack could disrupt essential operations. The standards are useful across manufacturing, energy, utilities, transportation, building automation, and other industries. They support stronger security, improved resilience, risk management, and more consistent protection of industrial control systems throughout their lifecycle.
