Identity Federation is a system that allows users to access multiple applications, services, or organizations using a trusted identity from a single authentication provider. Instead of creating and managing separate credentials for every service, users authenticate with a trusted identity provider, which securely communicates their identity and access information to connected systems. Standards such as SAML, OAuth, and OpenID Connect commonly support this process.

Identity Federation is widely used in enterprise applications, cloud services, education platforms, healthcare systems, and business-to-business environments. Its purpose is to simplify authentication while improving security and access management. Users benefit from fewer passwords and a more seamless sign-in experience, while organizations can centralize identity policies and reduce account-management overhead. Federation also supports controlled access across organizational boundaries without requiring every service to maintain independent user credentials.
