Fault Detection is the process of identifying abnormal conditions, defects, or malfunctions in equipment, systems, or processes. It uses sensor data, system behavior, diagnostic rules, and analytical models to recognize when something is operating outside its expected condition. Detecting faults early allows organizations to investigate problems before they develop into larger failures.

For example, sensors in a rotating machine can detect unusual vibration, temperature, or pressure that indicates a developing mechanical fault. A monitoring system can recognize these changes and alert maintenance teams to inspect the equipment. Fault Detection is useful in manufacturing, transportation, energy, healthcare, and IT infrastructure. It helps reduce downtime, improve safety, prevent equipment damage, and maintain reliable operations.
