Distributed computing is an approach in which multiple interconnected computers or devices work together to perform tasks, process data, or provide services. Instead of relying on a single machine, workloads are divided across different systems that communicate and coordinate their work over a network. This enables organizations to handle large and complex workloads more efficiently while making better use of available computing resources.

For example, a large organization may distribute a data-processing workload across hundreds of servers, allowing different machines to handle portions of the computation simultaneously. This can improve scalability, availability, processing capacity, and fault tolerance. Distributed computing is widely used in cloud platforms, big-data processing, scientific computing, content delivery, and large-scale applications. Related concepts include parallel computing, cloud computing, distributed systems, cluster computing, edge computing, and load balancing.
