A digital thread is a connected flow of data that links information across the different stages of a product or asset’s lifecycle. It creates continuity between design, engineering, manufacturing, quality, operations, maintenance, and service by making relevant information accessible and traceable across systems.

For example, a manufacturer can connect a product’s original design specifications with production records, inspection results, operating data, and maintenance history. This helps teams understand how decisions and changes made at one stage affect later stages, improving traceability, collaboration, and lifecycle management. Digital threads are commonly used in aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and other complex engineering environments. Related concepts include digital twins, data lineage, product lifecycle management, industrial IoT, and Industry 4.0.
