Device enrollment is the process of registering a device with an organization’s management or security system so it can be recognized, configured, and governed. During enrollment, the device is associated with an organizational identity and may receive certificates, security policies, configuration settings, applications, or access permissions. This establishes the device as a known and managed endpoint rather than simply allowing an unknown device onto the network.

For example, when an employee receives a company laptop, enrollment can automatically configure encryption, security controls, approved applications, and access requirements before the device is used for work. Mobile device management (MDM), enterprise mobility management (EMM), and unified endpoint management (UEM) platforms commonly use enrollment to manage devices throughout their lifecycle. Related concepts include device authentication, device identity, endpoint management, access control, and zero trust
