A Camera Calibration Matrix, also called the intrinsic camera matrix, describes the internal geometric properties of a camera. It typically contains the camera’s focal lengths, principal point coordinates, and sometimes a skew parameter. These values allow computer vision software to relate points in the real world to their corresponding positions on the camera’s image plane.

The matrix is essential for tasks such as 3D reconstruction, pose estimation, augmented reality, and robotics. For example, a vision system can use the calibration matrix to determine how a 3D point projects onto an image and compensate for differences in a camera’s optical characteristics. It is commonly used together with camera distortion coefficients and extrinsic parameters.
