Blue-Green Deployment is a release strategy that maintains two separate production environments: one runs the current application version while the other hosts the new release. The new version is deployed and tested in the inactive environment without disrupting the live system. Once it is ready, traffic is switched from the current environment to the new one, making the release effectively immediate from the user’s perspective.

The approach is particularly useful when teams need controlled releases with a straightforward rollback path. If problems appear after the traffic switch, routing can be redirected to the previous environment. Load balancers, DNS, service meshes, and automated deployment pipelines are commonly used to manage the transition between environments.
