A Binary Neural Network (BNN) is a neural network designed to perform computations using binary values, typically +1 and −1, instead of the higher-precision numbers used in conventional neural networks. By simplifying weights and, in some designs, activations, BNNs can greatly reduce memory usage and replace many costly multiplication operations with efficient bitwise operations. This makes them particularly useful when computational resources, memory, or power are limited.
BNNs are relevant to edge AI applications such as smart cameras, wearable devices, embedded sensors, and other hardware where fast inference and low energy consumption matter. Their main trade-off is reduced numerical precision, which can make training more difficult and may lower accuracy on complex tasks. Specialized quantization methods and hardware accelerators are often used to address these limitations.
