Availability monitoring is the continuous tracking of whether a system, service, application, or physical asset is operational and accessible when it is expected to be. It uses status signals, system metrics, health checks, and operational data to detect downtime, service interruptions, or reduced availability. Unlike performance monitoring, which focuses on how well something is operating, availability monitoring primarily determines whether it is functioning and reachable.
In industrial environments, availability monitoring can track production machines, pumps, compressors, power systems, or critical infrastructure and identify when an asset stops operating or becomes unavailable. For digital services, it can monitor servers, APIs, networks, and applications through automated health checks and uptime measurements. Availability monitoring is often combined with alert management, asset health monitoring, observability, and predictive maintenance to support faster response to disruptions.
