Alert prioritization is the process of ranking alerts according to their urgency, potential impact, and the action they require. Rather than treating every notification equally, it assigns higher priority to events that could cause significant operational, security, safety, or service consequences. Factors such as severity, affected systems, business impact, and time sensitivity can determine how an alert is classified.

In a security operations center, for example, a confirmed account compromise may require immediate attention, while a routine configuration warning can wait. Effective prioritization helps teams focus on the most consequential events, supports appropriate escalation, and reduces alert fatigue. It is closely related to alert management, incident response, and event correlation.
