Keypoint detection is a computer vision technique that identifies important points on objects or within images, such as corners, joints, edges, or distinctive features. These points help a system understand an object’s shape, position, and movement without needing to analyze every part of the image. Keypoints can be detected and tracked across images or video, allowing AI systems to recognize patterns and interpret visual information.

For example, a fitness application can detect keypoints around a person’s joints to estimate body posture during an exercise. The system can use these points to evaluate movement and provide feedback on technique. Keypoint detection is useful in pose estimation, robotics, augmented reality, object recognition, sports analysis, and facial applications, supporting accurate visual understanding and motion tracking.
