A Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a measurable value used to evaluate how effectively a person, team, or organization is achieving a specific goal. KPIs turn important objectives into clear measurements that can be tracked over time, such as sales growth, customer satisfaction, production efficiency, or system availability. By comparing actual results with defined targets, organizations can identify progress, weaknesses, and areas that need improvement.

For example, an online retailer might use order delivery time as a KPI to measure how efficiently it fulfills customer purchases. Managers can track the metric regularly and take action when performance falls below the desired target. KPIs are useful in business, IT, marketing, finance, operations, and project management. They support informed decision-making, performance improvement, accountability, and better alignment with organizational goals.
