Apache Kafka is a distributed event streaming platform designed to collect, store, and process large volumes of data as events move between applications and systems. It organizes events into streams that can be published by data producers and consumed by multiple applications. Kafka is built to handle high data volumes, support real-time processing, and remain available even when individual system components fail.

For example, an online retailer can use Kafka to stream events such as customer orders, payments, inventory changes, and shipment updates between different services. This allows applications to react to information as it happens rather than waiting for batch processing. Kafka is widely used for real-time analytics, microservices, monitoring, data integration, and event-driven applications, helping organizations build scalable and responsive data pipelines.
