Fault Isolation is the process of determining the specific component, subsystem, or location responsible for a detected problem. While Fault Detection identifies that something is wrong, Fault Isolation narrows the problem down to its likely source. It uses diagnostic data, system behavior, testing, and relationships between components to separate the faulty element from components that are operating normally.
For example, when an aircraft experiences an abnormal sensor reading, a diagnostic system can analyze signals from multiple connected components to determine whether the issue originates from the sensor, wiring, or another subsystem. Technicians can then focus their inspection and repair on the suspected source instead of checking the entire system.
