Data synchronization is the process of keeping data consistent across two or more systems, databases, applications, or devices. When information changes in one location, synchronization mechanisms detect and propagate those changes so other copies reflect the appropriate current state. It can occur continuously, periodically, or when a connection becomes available, depending on the system.
For example, a mobile application may synchronize locally stored customer records with a central server when the device reconnects to the network, resolving any changes made while offline. Unlike data replication, which focuses primarily on maintaining copies, synchronization emphasizes keeping datasets aligned as they change. Related concepts include data replication, database synchronization, conflict resolution, data integration, and distributed systems.
