Data Compression is the process of reducing the size of digital data so that it requires less storage space and can be transmitted more efficiently. It works by representing information in a more compact form while preserving the information needed for its intended use.

There are two main types of compression: lossless and lossy. Lossless compression reduces file size without permanently removing information, while lossy compression removes some data to achieve greater size reduction. Compression is widely used for images, videos, audio, documents, databases, and network communication. It helps reduce storage requirements, bandwidth consumption, transmission time, and overall infrastructure costs.
