Classification is the process of assigning data, objects, or events to predefined categories based on their characteristics. In artificial intelligence and machine learning, a classification model learns patterns from labeled examples and uses them to determine which category a new input belongs to.

Classification is widely used in applications such as image recognition, fraud detection, email filtering, customer segmentation, and video analytics. For example, a computer vision system can classify objects detected by a camera as people, vehicles, animals, or other predefined categories. Depending on the application, classification can be binary, with two possible categories, or multiclass, with several possible categories.
