A Business Rules Engine (BRE) is software that evaluates predefined business rules and applies them to incoming data or events to determine what should happen next. Instead of embedding decision logic directly into application code, organizations can manage rules such as eligibility criteria, pricing conditions, approval requirements, or compliance checks separately and have the engine evaluate them consistently.
A BRE is useful when decisions change frequently or depend on multiple conditions. For example, an insurance system can evaluate an application against rules for age, coverage, risk, and policy limits to determine whether it qualifies for automatic approval or requires human review. BREs are commonly used with workflow automation, decision management, and event-processing systems.
