BACnet, short for Building Automation and Control Networks, is a communication protocol designed for building automation systems. It enables devices such as HVAC controllers, lighting systems, sensors, access controls, and energy meters from different manufacturers to exchange information and coordinate operations. Rather than requiring each building system to operate as an isolated network, BACnet provides a standardized way for these devices to communicate and share their operating data.

BACnet is commonly used in commercial buildings, hospitals, campuses, and industrial facilities to integrate building services into centralized or distributed control systems. For example, a building management system can use BACnet data from temperature sensors and HVAC controllers to adjust air-conditioning operation based on current conditions. BACnet supports several communication methods, including BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP, allowing it to work across both modern IP networks and field-level automation infrastructure.
