Autonomous operations refers to the use of AI, automation, robotics, and connected systems to perform operational activities with minimal ongoing human intervention. An autonomous operation can continuously observe conditions, interpret real-time data, make decisions within defined parameters, and initiate actions without requiring an operator to manually manage every step.

In industrial environments, autonomous operations can coordinate production equipment, mobile robots, inspection systems, and maintenance workflows based on changing operating conditions. For example, a facility may automatically adjust production schedules when equipment performance changes, redirect material-handling robots when routes are blocked, or trigger maintenance workflows when an asset shows signs of deterioration. It brings together technologies such as AI, IoT, autonomous systems, edge computing, and process automation.
