An Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) is a mobile robotic system that can navigate and perform tasks in an environment without following a fixed path or requiring continuous human control. AMRs use sensors, cameras, maps, and navigation software to understand their surroundings, avoid obstacles, determine routes, and adjust movement as conditions change. This distinguishes them from traditional automated guided vehicles (AGVs), which typically rely on predefined routes or guidance infrastructure.

AMRs are widely used in warehouses, factories, hospitals, and other dynamic environments to transport materials, deliver supplies, inspect areas, or move inventory between locations. For example, an industrial AMR can detect a blocked aisle and calculate an alternative route while continuing its assigned task. Technologies such as LiDAR, computer vision, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and AI-based navigation commonly support AMR operation.
