Autonomous inspection is the use of AI-enabled machines, robots, drones, or other automated systems to examine assets and environments with limited human intervention. These systems can capture images, video, sensor readings, or other measurements and analyze them to identify defects, wear, corrosion, leaks, structural damage, or other abnormal conditions. The inspection process can be performed according to predefined routes, schedules, or operational conditions.

In industrial settings, autonomous inspection can be used to examine pipelines, storage tanks, electrical infrastructure, machinery, and hard-to-reach areas. For example, a drone can survey a facility while computer vision analyzes captured images for corrosion or physical damage. The approach combines robotics, computer vision, sensors, AI, and automated navigation to make inspections more consistent and reduce exposure to hazardous environments.
